SUU Nursing Student serves two years on State Board
April 4th, 2018 Cedar City, Utah
Chance Cooper, a senior nursing student attending Southern Utah University, has spent the last two years serving as the Treasurer for the Utah Student Nurses' Association (UtSNA). He was introduced to student association leadership by being nominated to serve as the Secretary for the SUU Student Nurses' Association. While attending a state convention, and opportunity arose to volunteer as the Treasurer, and he took a blind leap into the position. In the last two years, Chance has provided fiduciary responsibility and trust to the 523 members of the state association. He has been able to grow the annual operating budget by $3,000 every year, and is excited to see this trend continue. "My favorite part of being involved with UtSNA, is getting to work with other nursing students from across the state to encourage individual school chapters to get excited to be involved in a professional organization and enhance the leadership skills that already comes natural to most individuals pursuing a nursing career" Chance said.

Chance was a staple to the association in building a website and marketplace for members to register for convention, pre-order merchandise, and submit payments for their annual convention held in February of 2018 at BYU. This convention brought in over 300 student nurses, sixteen future employers, and nine guest speakers for a full day of fun. Chance has also travelled with the rest of the board to Dallas, TX and Nashville, TN for national conventions, where both years he serves as a representative from SUU in the House of Delegates, observing the parliamentary process and voting on bylaw amendments and addendum for future student nurses. Even though he got to see one of his favorite baseball teams (The Rangers) win at their home stadium, his most memorable moment was the excitement of heated debates of educated nursing students during the resolution hearings.

The UtSNA is a member run organization consisting of 523 members from twenty school across the state. Their mission is to mentor students preparing for initial licensure as registered nurses, and to convey the standards, ethics, and skills that students will need as responsible and accountable leaders and members of the profession. They have been an organization for sixty-six years, since the National Student Nurses' Association was founded in 1952. Their biggest accomplishments are holding an annual convention for its members and sending the entire board of directors to national annual conventions to enhance their own leadership skills and expand their professional network.
