Reflections

For the last three semesters, I have been on the Board of Directors for the Utah Student Nurses' Association as Treasurer. I have never held the treasurer position in any club or organization, so I hit the ground running with a lot to learn. I was able to bring my previous leadership and accounting skills from my work experience in retail management to the table, and enhance them by working with long distance with the rest of the team from all over Utah, as well as bridging the gap from our national organization to individual schools and local organizations.

One of the major annual events for training I was able participate in was the National Student Nurses' Association Convention in Dallas, Texas (2017) and Nashville, Tennessee (2018). I was a delegate voting in the house of representatives for Southern Utah University, as well as an attendee for being on the state board of directors. I learned a lot about professionalism in organizations, what fiduciary responsibility is, as well as how important member involvement is and how they sustain the organization. My favorite process of being a delegate was participating in the parliamentary processes and voting on changes to the code of ethics and bylaws, as well as the NSNA’s stand on specific health and student nurse associated topics. This experience has lead me to promote professionalism and involvement on the state and local chapters, and I can’t wait to attend convention again next year, which will be in Salt Lake City!
